Nerdy South From contributing writer Kris Bolz
HOWDY-HO, NERDERINOS! Butch, aka El Globoflexior, here with your Nerdy South selections to get your nerd on for the week of June 11th through the 17th. No fluff, let’s get straight to the stuff…
MONDAY JUNE 11th:
Don’t know about you but I appreciate kicking off my week with some serious video gaming. You know, in order get a jump start on all the gaming I’m sure to be doing later in the week anyways. And there seems to be no better opportunity to do so then this shindig going down at The Deep End. With several dozen free play systems set up, projectors, cheap taco & beer specials…WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?! Not to mention earning yourself a free taco for coming in cosplay!
TUESDAY JUNE 12TH:
As fun as Netflix & Chillin’ to the Tim Burton flick can be, it’ll never come close to experiencing The Demon Barber of Fleet Street as he was meant to be intended…on the live stage. The Atlanta Opera brings the Stephen Sondheim classic to life with their summer production being put on at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Unleash your inner-Hot Topic goth and partake in some proper culture all in one evening.
WEDNESDAY JUNE 13TH:
Evidently the City of Atlanta has decreed that every Wednesday of the summer shall from now on be CORNHOLE WEDNESDAY. And I’m ok with that if anything purely for the excuse to scream the word ‘CORNHOLE’ loudly in public for almost no damn good reason. There appears to be several events going on around town allowing you the satisfaction to toss bean bags among the likes of The Midway Pub and The Battery Atlanta.
THURSDAY JUNE 14TH:
If you can recite every line of dialogue from ARMY OF DARKNESS verbatim from memory, you might be a nerd. If you can argue the finer points in the differences between the baroque and romantic composers, you might be a more well cultured nerd. Enjoy a splendid summer evening out in Piedmont Park partaking in a free concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
FRIDAY JUNE 15TH:
Awwww…a true Atlanta institution and tradition. Every Friday night at the Plaza Theater, Lips Down on Dixie perform their shadowcast midnight showing of Rocky Horror. If for whatever reason you find your Friday night lacking, there is always this option. Honestly, I truly sleep better at night just knowing that another Friday means another excuse to go out in public in fishnet stockings.
SATURDAY JUNE 16TH:
If you’re feeling froggy, bring your controller and best trash talk down to Joystick Game Bar. Knock back a few drinks and kick some virtual booty. Tourny games including Smash Brothers, Street Fighter V, and Dragonball Fighter Z. Sign up, throw in a couple of bucks, kick ass, take home prize money. No guts. No Glory. No button mashing like a noob…
SUNDAY JUNE 17TH:
Hungover and maybe even a little butt-hurt from getting thoroughly pwned at fighting games last night? Restore your mana with a relaxing morning at the Bakery gathered around the good ole tabletop. Some games provided or BYOG.
That’ll wrap up this week’s recommendations. For more geeking-out hoopla, tune in same nerd time same nerd column.
